Attacks on symbols of Ukrainian identity\, cultural centres\, schools\, archives and museums are often planned and deliberate. In the last two years\, UNESCO has observed that 343 cultural sites across the country have been damaged\, including 127 religious buildings\, 31 museums\, 151 historic buildings\, 19 monuments\, 14 libraries and one archive centre. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n This exhibition presents images collected by Polish and Ukrainian photographers who documented the appalling destruction of these sites in Ukraine. \nThe aim here is to highlight an aspect of war that is often overlooked: the attack on identity and cultural diversity. Through these images\, everyone is encouraged to question the importance of preserving cultural heritage in the midst of conflict\, in accordance with international law\, and to recognise its essential value in shaping a nation’s identity and resilience. \nThis exhibition\, co-produced by the European Heritage Heads Forum and Les Halles Saint-Géry\, has been made possible thanks to the work of the Polish National Institute for Cultural Heritage and the image collection work carried out by the Polish Centre for Cultural Support in Ukraine. Climate science is increasingly pointing to the fact that the frequency and intensity of such storms will increase in the future. The flood also showed how vulnerable the built heritage is and how urgently the questions surrounding strengthening its resilience should be addressed and answered. It is important to address the negative consequences of climate change now in order to take timely measures for adaptation and prevention. \nUsing the example of the process and handling of the Nepomuk Bridge in Rech\, the topic will be addressed in a three-day workshop. The aim is to give the next generation an insight into how complex and multi-layered the discourse surrounding the preservation of our heritage can be through discussion\, on-site experiences in the Ahr Valley and presentations by experts. The spectrum of case studies will refer both to the territory of the German Empire itself at the time\, as well as to the former German colonies in Africa\, East Asia and the South Pacific. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n With regard to the identification\, systematic inventory and visualization of colonial-era individual buildings and ensembles\, of monuments and even entire cities and infrastructural landscapes\, as well as of today’s commemorative and memorial sites and places\, the focus of interest will primarily be on the political\, civic and architectural / artistic forms of appropriation on site and the strategies of dealing with them in terms of scientific methodology and monument conservation. \nThe two-day symposium aims to increase the visibility and knowledge of this architectural heritage from the German colonial era and to promote dialogue with today’s custodians or those concernedon site. It has produced several international conventions\, a series of recommendations\, and a model of highly-valued expert assistance for the new Member States\, and has successfully set the tone for heritage conservation. As a result\, almost all European countries have gained a mutually understandable philosophy of heritage conservation\, a better-groomed cultural landscape\, more professional approaches to the maintenance and nurturing of cultural assets\, and a stronger focus on the awareness and recognition of cultural values.
