SUMMARY:Monuments and Sites de-colonial! Methods and Strategies of Dealing with the Archi- tectural Heritage of the German Colonial Era
DESCRIPTION:Monuments and Sites de-colonial! will be dealing with the architectural relics of the German colonial era and investigating post-colonial strategies of appropriation and critical communication regarding these buildings. In addition to possible references to pre-colonial legacies\, the focus will be primarily on the period of the German colonial era from around 1880 to 1920. The spectrum of case studies will refer both to the territory of the German Empire itself at the time\, as well as to the former German colonies in Africa\, East Asia and the South Pacific. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n With regard to the identification\, systematic inventory and visualization of colonial-era individual buildings and ensembles\, of monuments and even entire cities and infrastructural landscapes\, as well as of today’s commemorative and memorial sites and places\, the focus of interest will primarily be on the political\, civic and architectural / artistic forms of appropriation on site and the strategies of dealing with them in terms of scientific methodology and monument conservation. \nThe two-day symposium aims to increase the visibility and knowledge of this architectural heritage from the German colonial era and to promote dialogue with today’s custodians or those concernedon site. Four sections will question for instance: Which architectural traces of German colonialism are still visible today in Germany and in the former German colonies? How can these buildings be identified and documented\, especially with regard to their post-colonial existence? Which contemporary methods and critical strategies of dealing with former German colonial architecture are emerging today? How can these methods and strategies be systematically documented and under-stood? And how do today’s users and custodians or heirs and heritage communities on the territory of the former German Reich and in the former German colonies in Africa\, Asia and Oceania contribute to the decolonization of this building stock? How can constructive dialogue and professional exchange in the sense of “shared heritage” be promoted beyond today’s national borders? \nThe conference will be a cooperation between ICOMOS Germany (Homepage) and the TU Munich (Project Homepage). Selected papers will be published after the conference in the series ICOMOS –Journals of the German National Committee. \nProposals with the title of the paper and an abstract of 200 words maximum\, a short CV and the affiliation of the speaker(s)\, as well as any queries regarding the content of the symposium\, are requested by 10 August 2023 to icomos@icomos.de. \n \n More details to come

SUMMARY:Call for participation: workshop on geoheritage management in UNESCO designated sites
DESCRIPTION:UNESCO\, with its unique mandate in Earth Sciences\, plays a vital role in promoting a sustainable world\, with geoscience at the core of its mission. A workshop on geoheritage management in UNESCO designated sites will be held on 19 – 22 October 2023 for personnel working with current or aspiring natural UNESCO designated sites. \nWorkshop details\nTo address these pressing needs\, the UNESCO International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme Secretariat\, in collaboration with the World Heritage Centre and experts  from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)\, is holding a workshop on Geoheritage Management on 19 – 22 October 2023\, in Azores Archipelago\, Portugal. The workshop is for staff and managers of World Heritage properties (designated under criterion viii) as well as other type of nationally or internationally designated areas (biosphere reserve\, UNESCO Global Geopark\, national park\, etc. ) to address the following topics: \n\nSince 2010\, UNESCO received 35 World Heritage nominations under criterion (viii). Only 16 of them were inscribed on the World Heritage List based on this criterion and unfortunately high number of nominations failed to demonstrate their Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) due to not being able to properly characterise the geodiversity and geoheritage of the site;\nIncreasing touristic use of World Heritage properties and other conserved areas is putting geoheritage at risk and site managers are asking guidance to address these risks;\nDue to climate change\, weather patterns change and sea level rise\, site managers are asking new methods to mitigate risks for geoheritage conservation and protection;\nAs geodiversity underpins biodiversity\, UNESCO designated site managers aim to include in their management plans appropriate measures to guarantee that geodiversity continues to provide ecosystem services but they are not familiar with new developments about geodiversity.\n\nEligible candidates will receive a sponsorship from UNESCO for their participation in the workshop.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n A call for applications is now open until 13 August 2023.\nUNESCO celebrates and protects the geological heritage of designated sites –including 93 properties inscribed under the World Heritage Convention\, 195 UNESCO Global Geoparks\, and 714 Biosphere reserves*– while promoting sustainable development and addressing the challenges posed by climate change and biodiversity loss. Numerous sites have received a UNESCO label for their geological heritage\, however effective management of this geoheritage remains a challenge. The finite and irreplaceable nature of geoheritage calls for appropriate conservation measures to ensure its preservation for future generations. \nSite managers are often not familiar with the scientific methods and best practices for evaluating\, monitoring\, and managing geoheritage. Additionally\, the increasing tourism activities in these sites pose risks to geoheritage\, warranting guidance to address such challenges. Moreover\, climate change-induced shifts in weather patterns and sea level rise require new strategies for mitigating risks to geoheritage. As geodiversity underpins biodiversity\, it is crucial for UNESCO designated site managers to incorporate up-to-date developments on geodiversity into their management plans. \nHow to apply\nEligible representatives of UNESCO designated sites\, as well as other types of conserved areas dealing with geoheritage management\, should send the following documents to the International Geoscience and Geoparks (IGGP) Secretariat before 13 August 2023: \n\nA brief geological description of your site (500-1000 words)\nA cover letter explaining your expectations from the workshop and how it might help you to set-up a new geoheritage management plan and/or improve existing geoheritage management plan for your site and deliver it (500-1000 words)\nYour CV\n\nThe present call prioritizes trainees from developing countries and UNESCO Member States. Women and early career participants are especially encouraged to apply. \n \n Contact to apply\n \n More info

SUMMARY:International Conference on Cultural Tourism Advances
DESCRIPTION:While exact estimates are difficult to make\, it has repeatedly been mentioned that approximately 40% of all European tourists make a destination choice based on the cultural offerings. This leads to significant economic effects and has further strengthened the view of cultural heritage as a strategic resource for its economic impact\, but also for its role in creating and enhancing social capital and achieving the goals of smart\, sustainable and inclusive growth. At the same time\, economic effects have been distributed unequally – often being more prevalent in urbanized areas – and the exponential growth of tourism (notwithstanding the dip during the Covid-19 pandemic) created issues of both over-and underexploitation. \nThe goal of this Conference is to further understanding of the sustainable development potential of cultural tourism by focusing on successful policy interventions\, new cultural tourism trends\, advances in visitor management systems\, and new business and/or governance models. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Expected contributions include technical papers (presenting recent advances on Cultural Tourism) and project papers (describing their major outcomes in the Cultural Tourism domain). \nTopics (not restricted to): \n\ncultural tourism policy\ncultural tourism management and governance\ndynamic visitor management systems\ncontribution to regional development and resilience\n transformative tourism\nsustainable development indicators\nforecasting; virtual museums\naugmented reality and other digital visitor-centric tools\n digitization for preservation\npublic accessibility\n\nSelected and presented papers are expected to be published by a Springer book reflecting the breakthroughs and future perspectives of Cultural Tourism. \n \n REGISTER

SUMMARY:The Sense of Contemporary Architecture in the Preservation of Cultural Heritage
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of Europe\, the National Heritage Board of Latvia is organizing an international conference “The Sense of Contemporary Architecture in the Preservation of Cultural Heritage” which will take place in Riga on 29-31 May. \nIt is often the case that the architectural heritage is damaged by the architectural sector itself\, but there are also many success stories where high-quality contemporary architecture contributes to the preservation and re-use of cultural heritage.\n \nOver a period of 30 years\, the Council of Europe\, with the involvement of  other international institutions\, has built a  European platform for professional cooperation on cultural heritage based on democratic principles. It has produced several international conventions\, a series of recommendations\, and a model of highly-valued expert assistance for the new Member States\, and has successfully set the tone for heritage conservation. As a result\, almost all European countries have gained a mutually understandable philosophy of heritage conservation\, a better-groomed cultural landscape\, more professional approaches to the maintenance and nurturing of cultural assets\, and a stronger focus on the awareness and recognition of cultural values. This system culminated in the Faro Convention on the Value of Cultural Heritage for Society.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The National Heritage Board of Latvia calls for highlighting the best examples in Europe where contemporary architecture has positively contributed to the preservation of cultural heritage: by raising quality through well-considered contemporary design\, by efforts to use what has already been built and thus avoid demolition\, by compact construction\, minimum consumption of materials\, use of renewable energy\, and ‘repair-instead-of-replace’ mindset\, as well as by construction that incorporates responsibility for the future. \nWe invite a representatives from heritage institutions to experience the cultural heritage of Latvia and to share the most prominent positive examples at the international conference highlighting the role of contemporary architecture in the preservation of cultural heritage. \nRegistration is open until April 21. The number of participants is limited. \n \n Agenda\n \n Registration Link

SUMMARY:Call for papers: Repurposing Churches
DESCRIPTION:The renowned magazine “Die Denkmalpflege”\, published by the association of monument offices in the federal states of germany\, invites you to submit current papers on the subject of church conversion: \nChurches loosing their function and being repurposed is nothing new. Apart from well-known historical cases such as the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul\, a number of recent examples from the Netherlands\, the United Kingdom and East Germany show how the conversion of houses of worship for purposes ranging from dwellings to offices to cultural venues has been going on since the 1970s. Yet in the past twenty years this development in Germany has taken on a very different dynamic and we asume parallels allover Europe. The situation and its causes have been widely analysed and a wealth of experience gained\, both in how best to handle the loss of function by secular repurposing\, demolition or transfer to a different religious community. Many publications and conferences devoted to the topic. Now it seems to be time for a review: \nWe are looking for examples that have been proven to be viable\, in economic terms as well as in terms of monument preservation\, and maybe even left the framework of usual new Functions such as kindergarden\, columbarium or concert hall leave. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n In addition to case studies and overviews\, we are also looking for discussions of how the process of repurposing should be prepared and overseen: How can all those affected be involved in the process right from the start and in such a way that good solutions are found? Which urban-planning and sociological dimensions have to be borne in mind? Which general conditions might need adjustment? What should be the role of the state – besides overseeing the preservation of historical monuments – if even the non-Christian majority of society regards these buildings as landmarks? Also worthy of consideration as a source of ideas and inspiration would be the situation abroad. \n  \nBrief exposés can be submittet to the editorial board by 17 May 2023 to Melanie.Mertens@rps.bwl.de. \n \n CALL FOR PAPERS
