International Day of Monuments and Sites 2023 – Socialist Modernism

Berlin, Germany

Herewith we would like to send you the Program for our planned workshop “Socialist Modernism”. The workshop will take place on 18-20 April on the occasion of the International Day of Monuments and Sites in Berlin and online. It is organized by ICOMOS Germany with the Max Lingner Foundation in cooperation with the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg. The event is supported by the Landesdenkmalamt Berlin, Helle Panke and the Hermann Henselmann Foundation.

The focus of the English-language workshop is the legacy of the “second socialist modernism” (1955-1990) in architecture and urban planning. The aim is to offer experts a cross-border platform for critical exchange. Guided tours to monuments and sites of Eastern Modernism in Berlin-Brandenburg will round off the workshop program.

A registration is only required for participation in Berlin. Therefore, please send a mail to info@max-lingner-stiftung.de  or info@helle-pankow.de  (for the guided tours). A Youtube link to the workshop will be provided soon.

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The first European Heritage Summit was organised in London from April 26 to 28, 2006 by Dr Simon Thurley, former Chief Executive of English Heritage. The mission of the summit was to bring together for the first time those responsible for Europe's cultural heritage, to create an opportunity to exchange experiences in heritage management and to initiate joint action. The first summit brought together 23 European countries, who agreed in the summit's final declaration to continue to meet annually in the form of a European Heritage Heads Forum. Each year, future host countries are chosen by mutual agreement at the annual meeting, so that the tradition can continue.
