As part of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of Europe, the National Heritage Board of Latvia is organizing an international conference "The Sense of Contemporary Architecture in the Preservation of Cultural Heritage" which will take place in Riga on 29-31 May. It is often the case that the architectural heritage is damaged by the architectural sector itself, but there are also many success stories where high-quality contemporary architecture contributes to the preservation and re-use of cultural heritage.

While exact estimates are difficult to make, it has repeatedly been mentioned that approximately 40% of all European tourists make a destination choice based on the cultural offerings. This leads to significant economic effects and has further strengthened the view of cultural heritage as a strategic resource for its economic impact, but also for its role in creating and enhancing social capital and achieving the goals of smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. At the same time, economic effects have been distributed unequally – often being more prevalent in urbanized areas – and the exponential growth of tourism (notwithstanding the dip during the Covid-19 pandemic) created issues of both over-and underexploitation.

Conference: Museums, Collections and Society

The Interdisciplinary Research Group Museums, Collections and Society (MCS) is organizing a conference on 5-6 July 2023, in collaboration with the LDE Centre for Global Heritage and Development.

The conference sessions will cover topics such as the changing roles of modern art museums, the protection of cultural heritage in Ukraine, provenance research and the digital, and collecting in the 21st century, bringing together national and international colleagues to discuss issues and problems in their fields of expertise.
